Then and now: life in a divided Ukraine

In April 1977, Ukrainian activist Myroslav Marynovych was arrested by Soviet police. He was 28 at the time, and had become an outspoken advocate for human rights, working to raise awareness about ongoing violations in what is now Ukraine. In the eyes of the Soviets, though, his work threatened to undermine state order, and it carried a stiff sentence: seven years in a gulag labor camp, followed by five years in exile.

Today, Marynovych works as the vice rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, a cosmopolitan city in western Ukraine. It's a far cry from the hardships he endured in the Perm-36 gulag, but his political passions still burn strong. And when protests broke out in Kiev's Maidan square late last year, he felt he had...

Sony is increasing the price of the PlayStation 4 in Canada

There's an unspoken rule in the tech world that early adopters always pay more for the newest gear. "Just wait and the price will drop" is a sage piece of advice that we've all heard once in our lives. But any PlayStation 4 buyers going off of that logic in Canada will be sorely disappointed to hear that Sony is raising the price of the console by CAD$50 starting today to CAD$449.99.

The highly unusual case of a price hike is a "response to changes in the market environment," according to a statement Sony provided to the Financial Post . The company didn't clarify specifically what those changes are, but it's highly possible that a weakening Canadian Dollar has led to the price adjustment. On November 15th, launch day, the $399.99 price...

Shakespeare's 'The Empire Striketh Back' pits Elizabethan Jedi Knights against Sith Lords

It's once again time to head to a galaxy far, far away as though it were written a long time ago. Last summer, Ian Doescher created a Shakespearean adaptation of the first Star Wars , and now he's back with the second installment. William Shakespeare's Star Wars: The Empire Striketh Back turns the original series' midpoint into a play composed in iambic pentameter and filled with gorgeous black-and-white illustrations of some of its most iconic characters, settings, and moments. "A price still lies upon my head, and if / I do not make amends with Jabba, I / Shall not repay with money, nay, but life," Han says early in the first act, while speaking with Leia and Rieekan.

Lego robot crushes Rubik's Cube world record with superhuman speed

And you thought that Lego castle you built as a kid was impressive. Two engineers in England have set the world record for completing a Rubik's Cube with a robot made from the ubiquitous plastic blocks. The (somewhat) cleverly-named Cubestormer 3 robot accomplished the impressive feat in just 3.253 seconds — about 62 percent faster than the previous world record, which was held by the second-generation version of the robot. That time also destroyed the current human record, set by the Dutchman Mats Valk, who set a 5.55 second time last year.

Of course, it takes a bit more than some Lego bricks to come up with that kind of time. The robot itself uses motors, actuators, and arms from a handful of Lego Mindstorm sets, while a custom-made...
