Samsung thinks its new 85-inch Interactive Display is the digital whiteboard for the COVID-19 classroom

Samsung

Samsung would like you to believe its new 85-inch Interactive Display can bridge the gap between students in the classroom and students studying at home, now that blended-learning is the new normal across the country. In reality, it’s just a slightly bigger digital whiteboard — but assuming it doesn’t cost too much, the tweaked vision does sound intriguing.

Now that COVID-19 has swept the country, some students are huddling around tiny Chromebook screens at home while others stay in class, and Samsung’s internet-connected digital whiteboard promises to let students and teachers collaborate with each other, whether they’re in that classroom drawing on the board or adding to it in real-time from their laptop at home. The goal here isn’t to...

The MagSafe Charger may leave a circular imprint on leather iPhone cases

Take care of your leather case when charging with the MagSafe Charger.

What you need to know

  • Apple Support has published a new support document about the MagSafe Charger.
  • The document explains that the charger could leave a circular imprint on leather cases.
  • It is not clear if that will also impact Apple's upcoming MagSafe Leather cases.

In a new support document detailing how to use your MagSafe Charger with the iPhone 12 lineup, there is a warning about the use of leather cases with the new charger all the way at the bottom of the document.

Apple says that, if you use a leather case with your new iPhone 12 and keep the case on while charging with the MagSafe Charger, you may notice a circular imprint on the case after disconnecting it from the charger.

If you keep your iPhone in a leather case while charging with your MagSafe Charger, the case might show circular imprints from the contact.

This is most likely due to the fact that leather is a soft material and, as Apple explains below, the MagSafe Charger may heat up a bit when charging, so this could cause the leather to soften up and "mold" itself in a way around the charger.

As with other wireless chargers, your iPhone or MagSafe Charger might get slightly warmer while your iPhone charges. To extend the lifespan of your battery, if the battery gets too warm, software might limit charging above 80 percent. Your iPhone or MagSafe Charger could get warmer and charging could take longer after heavy use. Your iPhone will charge again when the temperature drops. Try moving your iPhone and charger to a cooler location.

Hopefully, Apple's own MagSafe Leather Case for the iPhone 12 will be resistant to this kind of imprint, but we'll have to wait until the company releases those cases next month. In addition, Apple does not say if such an imprint would perhaps go away over time. That is most likely because, with the range of leather cases that exist in the market, it would be almost impossible to make that kind of assurance.

If you use a leather case and plan to keep doing so with your new iPhone, the best thing to do would be to take your iPhone out of the case when using the MagSafe Charger. Unless, of course, the case manufacturer says that the case is "imprint proof."

Get your face ready for extra security with Face ID on your new iPhone 12

How do you set up and customize Face ID so you can unlock your iPhone with a look? Like this!

Face ID is Apple's name for the biometric facial identity scanner on its latest iPhone devices, including the brand new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. With it, you can unlock your iPhone and secure apps just by looking at your device. You can even authenticate Apple Pay, the App Store, and iTunes transactions with Face ID too.

Here's what you need to know about how to set up Face ID on your iPhone 12.

What devices support Face ID?

Now that Face ID has been around for a few years, it's available across a lot more devices, including some iPad models. Here's every device that has Face ID support.

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • 11-inch iPad Pro (2018 and later)
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2018 and later)
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max

How do you set up Face ID?

Setting up Face ID is similar to setting up Touch ID, only easier. iOS will offer to let you set up Face ID as part of your initial iPhone setup. But you can also set up Face ID — and reset it — anytime you want.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Enter your Passcode.

  4. Tap Set Up Face ID (or Set Up an Alternate Appearance if you've actually already set up Face ID).
  5. Tap Get Started.
  6. Perform your first scan by slowly moving your head in a cirlce.

  7. Tap Continue.
  8. Perform your second scan by slowly moving your head in a cirlce.
  9. Tap Done.

Now you can start using Face ID on your new iPhone!

How do you turn off Require Attention for Face ID?

By default, your Face ID-supported iPhone will require you look at it before it will authenticate. If you want to be able to unlock without looking directly at your iPhone screen, for accessibility or convenience reasons, you can turn it off. It's not as secure, but if you want to unlock while your iPhone is on the table or you're holding it off to the side, you can.

Note: The Face ID system still has to be able to see your eyes, nose, and mouth in order to authenticate you. So, even with attention off, there's a limit to its field of view.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Enter your Passcode.

  4. Toggle Require Attention for Face ID to Off
  5. Tap OK on the security warning.

Tap the switch again if you want Require Attention back on.

How do you reset Face ID?

If you want to switch the person's face that's registered on your iPhone or, for whatever reason, you simply want to redo your own Face ID setup, you can!

Note: There's no confirmation required — dear Apple, please add a confirmation dialog! — so the moment you tap the button, your Face ID will be gone and you'll have to set it up again to get it back.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.

  3. Enter your Passcode.
  4. Tap Reset Face ID.
