Facebook wants to help register 4 million voters this year with new ‘Voting Information Center’

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Facebook aims to improve the resources it providers American voters and will attempt to help more people register to vote ahead of the 2020 US election, according to a new op-ed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg published in USA Today on Tuesday evening.

Zuckerberg says the company set a goal of helping 4 million people register to vote, up from 2 million four years ago, through resources provided across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Facebook will also introduce a new “Voting Information Center” similar in design to its COVID-19 hub, which features vetted public health information and news about the novel coronavirus and related topics.

“The 2020 election is going to be unlike any other. It was already going to be a heated campaign, and...

Qualcomm launches new Snapdragon 690 processor to add 5G to budget phones

Qualcomm is launching its next 5G chipset today, the Snapdragon 690, the first product in its 6-series chips to get support for the next-generation networking standard — although it’ll only support the slower sub-6GHz versions of 5G, not the faster mmWave standard.

The new Snapdragon 690 also promises a variety of other improvements over the previous 6-series chips. Qualcomm says it’ll offer 20 percent better CPU performance and 60 percent faster graphics rendering compared to the Snapdragon 675.

But the addition of 5G support — by way of a new Snapdragon X51 modem — is particularly important for the broader adoption of 5G, given that the company’s 6-series chips tend to show up in midrange and...

Linksys expands Wi-Fi 6 mesh router line with the affordable AX1800

The latest Linksys Wi-Fi 6 router comes with an affordable price tag.

What you need to know

  • Linksys has introduced the affordable AX1800 WiFi 6 Router.
  • The latest, budget friendly model can reach 1.8gbps speeds and covers up to 1,700 sq.ft.
  • The AX1800 also supports mesh networking technology for future expansion.

Linksys has expanded its WiFi 6 router line today, with the release of the budget-friendly AX1800. The latest offering not only supports the latest Wi-Fi standard and includes dual-band mesh networking technology for future expansion.

At Linksys, we believe that WiFi is the foundation of the modern home," says Kannan Vardarajan, director of product management at Linksys. "We are witnessing a shift in home productivity as more consumers rely on their home network for remote work, virtual healthcare and entertainment, and we're proud to be offering an affordable, innovative, future-ready solution with the MAX-STREAM AX1800 Mesh WiFi 6 Router (MR7350) for consumers to enjoy today and for years to come.

The MAX-STREAM AX1800 comes with an affordable price tag, starting at just $149.99, and supports homes up to 1,700 sq.ft. in size. The budget friendly router has four LAN ports, one USB 3.0 port, and can reach speeds up to 1.8gbps.

Mesh networking support allows the router to work with other Linksys mesh routers for expanding coverage. The AX1800 can either operate as the main router in a mesh network, or as a node for an existing network.

The MAX-STREAM AX1800 Mesh WiFi 6 Router (MR7350) follows the MAX-STREAM Dual-Band Mesh WiFi 6 Router (MR9600) announced earlier this year, offering the latest WiFi standard and signature Linksys Intelligent Mesh™ Technology for a fast, reliable and seamlessly expandable home WiFi network. Designed with the same scalability and flexibility of Linksys mesh systems, the MAX-STREAM AX1800 Mesh WiFi 6 Router (MR7350) provides speeds up to 1.8 Gbps and coverage of up to 1,700 square feet for nonstop streaming, gaming, and binge watching anywhere in the household.

The latest release follows the introduction of the MAX-STREAM MR9600 earlier this year, which is designed for larger homes, with coverage reaching 3,000 sq.ft. The MR9600 also offers enhanced speeds, with it capable of hitting 6gbps, and just like the AX1800, it features dual-band mesh networking.

To take advantage of WiFi 6, users will need to have a newer device, such as Apple's iPhone 11 line. In addition to WiFi 6, both routers are backward compatible with existing 802.11 ac/n/g/b/a standards.

The AX1800 router is available now through Best Buy and as a pre-order directly from Linksys. The MAX-STREAM MR9600 is also available through Best Buy as well as Amazon with a retail price of $399.99.

Apple is reopening a bunch of stores in the US and Canada… again

Masked retail workers stand across a counter from a customer.

Apple is reopening 70 more stores in the United States and Canada, after an ongoing back-and-forth that saw the company closing stores due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then starting to reopen them, then closing them again because of the widespread protests and rioting that occurred after the death of George Floyd.

It's been an unprecedented bit of chaos for Apple's retail efforts as customers, governments, and workers focused on more critical concerns than iPhones and MacBooks. The 70 stores opening over the course of this week include locations in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Quebec.

Apple retail and HR head Deirdre O'Brien wrote this note to staff, as quoted in 9to5Mac:
