AMC Theaters plans to reopen more than 100 locations in the US starting August 20th

Re-opening Continues Across Densely Populated New York And New Jersey Areas Photo by Noam Galai/Getty Images

AMC Theaters has detailed its plans to reopen movie theaters throughout the US, in addition to a new deadline for its MoviePass-style A-List subscription, in an email sent to customers on Wednesday.

Starting August 20th, AMC plans to have more than 100 theaters open, and it says it will continue opening locations “such that about two-thirds of our theatres across the country should be open no later than September 3.” AMC has repeatedly delayed its reopening as spread of the coronavirus has caused massive spikes in positive cases in parts of the US that have started to ease restrictions.

The company, the largest theater chain in the country,...

iFixit’s Galaxy Buds Live teardown shows that even Samsung calls them beans

Image: iFixit

iFixit, a company known for its tech product teardowns, has dissected Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds Live wireless headphones. Despite not officially calling them Galaxy Beans, the word “bean” is actually printed inside each earbud — which shows that at one point or another, the company was totally calling these earbuds the vegetables they resemble.

Comparing to other wireless earbuds like Apple’s AirPods Pro, iFixit points out the Galaxy Buds Live are not hard to pry open, and actually some of the easiest buds they’ve ever dissected. Inside, you can clearly see “bean left” and “bean right” on the cable that connects the two halves of each earbud.

iFixit also found that the battery is a standard size and...

The iPhone has set a Q2 record in the U.S. as overall market declines

The iPhone is setting records while new 5G devices struggle.

What you need to know

  • Apple has set a new quarterly iPhone record in Q2 of 2020.
  • It has shipped over 15 million iPhones in the United States.
  • The introduction of the iPhone SE grew Q2 market share to 47%.

The iPhone set a new record in Q2 2020 in the United States.

Reported by analytics firm Canalys, Apple shipped over fifteen million iPhones in the second quarter of this year, and sold 15% more of the iPhone 11 than last year's bestseller, the iPhone XR. The addition of of the new iPhone SE resulted in Apple taking a massive 47% market share in the second quarter as well.

Apple and Samsung accounted for seven out of every 10 devices sold, and Apple established a new domestic record in Q2, shipping 15.0 million iPhones. It shipped 15% more of its flagship iPhone 11 than last year's best-seller, the iPhone XR. With the launch of the iPhone SE, Apple's quarterly market share ballooned to 47%.

While Apple experienced record-breaking success in the second quarter, the smartphone industry as whole has suffered, in part because of a lukewarm consumer response to the focus around 5G on recent devices. Canalys analyst Vincent Thielke says that the pandemic and consumers staying at home has curbed any enthusiasm in the new technology.

"As the coronavirus pandemic forced consumers to stay at home, 5G adoption in the US failed to take off. Store closures and virus fears limited interaction with demonstration models, tight consumer budgets further constrained spending power, and with scarce 5G network coverage in American suburbia, consumers saw plenty of reasons to buy a 4G device instead. Despite the lackluster 5G roll-out so far, strong carrier marketing in coming quarters will be instrumental in catalyzing a multi-year transition period from LTE to 5G."

Apple is expected to launch a new lineup of iPhones this fall that will feature 5G. We'll have to wait and see if Apple's new iPhone will be enough to kickstart widespread consumer interest in the new technology. If you'd rather stick with your new iPhone SE, however, you can protect it by checking out the Best iPhone SE (2020) Cases in 2020.

Prosser: iPhone 12 launching week of Oct 19, Pro models not until November

Jon Prosser predicts when the new iPhones, Apple Watch, and iPad are coming.

What you need to know

  • Jon Prosser has dates for the new iPhones.
  • The iPhone 12 will come out in October, while the Pro models will be delayed until November.
  • Apple will also release a new Apple Watch and iPad in September.

Jon Prosser is back and with some iPhone dates in hand.

The leaker predicts that Apple will be hosting its iPhone event the week of October 12th, with preorders for the iPhone 12 models kicking off the same week. Apple will begin shipping the devices the following week.

Prosser says that the iPhone 12 Pro models will be pushed back even further, with both preorders and ship dates falling back into the month of November.

He also claims that Apple will announce a new Apple Watch and iPad through press release the week of September 7th and that both devices will be available for order immediately.

Prosser warns that since this year's iPhone release will be staggered and that the Pro models will be delayed even further than the regular models that dates can always change. He does say, however, that "this is the info in the system."

Announcing the new Apple Watch and iPad in a press release instead of including it as part of the fall event would be a departure from previous years for Apple. Normally, the new Apple Watch is always part of the same event as the new iPhone.

Apple confirmed that the launch of the iPhone 12 would be delayed in its recent earnings call with investors, but did specificy the exact new launch dates.
