Una historia de los planetarios: de las esferas armilares a los proyectores digitales
En esta pieza que el Musen Americano de Historia Natural hizo en conmemoración del 150º aniversario del nacimiento de Charles Hayden (1870-1937) y cuenta la historia de los planetearios, aunque un poco centrada en los de Estados Unidos. Hayden era hombre de negocios que financió en 1935 la construcción del famoso planetario que lleva su nombre en Nueva York, ahora convertido en el Rose Center for Earth and Space, dirigido por el mismísimo Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Las antiguas esferas armilares y planetarios mecánicos (orreys) eran complicados mecanismos con ruedas dentadas y palancas, que reproducían los movimientos de los planetas y cuerpos celestes. El planetario moderno como tal fue un invento de la empresa de óptica Carl Zeiss: esferas, motores y lentes perfectamente sincronizados. Ya existía uno en Estados Unidos (el Planetario Adler) que Hayden al verlo quería replicar en Nueva York. Pero al ser un inventó alemán no entraba dentro de los planes de financiación del New Deal para la reconstrucción de los Estados Unidos tras la Gran Depresión, de modo que lo financió personalmente.
A esos inventos siguieron muchos otros. Ya en los 90 comenzó la era digital y los planetarios empezaron a poder sustituirse por proyectores de imágenes igual de precisos y con infinitas posibilidades más, aunque no con el mismo encanto, claro.
Todavía tiene entre mayores y pequeños un gran impacto ver esos gigantescos planetarios mecánicos en el centro de las cúpulas de proyección, aunque se pueda hacer lo mismo con proyectores digitales de alta resolución. De hecho hay estupendos espectáculos divulgativos que suelen combinar ambos sistemas. Y los planetarios, como tales, siguen resultando muy educativos para las explicaciones y clases sobre astronomía, aunque se pueda hacer casi lo mismo con la pantalla de un ordenador y un software suficientemente avanzado.
