Slack’s new notification schedules give you your weekends back

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Slack is now letting you choose when you get notifications on a per-day basis, meaning you can finally stop getting Slack pings over the weekend.

Previously, Slack let you set when you were “available” to receive notifications, but those preferences would also roll over to the weekends. That meant you could get Slack distracting and unnecessary notifications on your computer or phone while you were enjoying an otherwise lazy Sunday.

Now, though, you’ll be able to set when you are comfortable getting notifications but turn on a blanket no-notification policy for weekends (or whichever days/times work best for your schedule) if you want.

When you have notifications turned off, you’ll be in...

Ireland launches COVID-19 app using Apple and Google's technology

Ireland is the latest country to use Apple and Google's Exposure Notification API.

What you need to know

  • Ireland has launched its official COVID-19 contact tracing app.
  • The app will allow users to be notified if they were in contact with an infected person.
  • The app uses Apple and Google's Exposure Notification API.

Another COVID-19 contact tracing app has launched that uses Apple and Google's Exposure Notification API.

Reported by 9to5Mac, Ireland has launched COVID Tracker Ireland, its official contact tracing app for the country.

Users who download the app will be able to track symptoms, anonymously warn others if they have tested positive, and be alerted if they have been exposed to someone with the virus.

If you use the app you will:

  • Be alerted if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus
  • Be able to track your symptoms and get advice on what to do
  • Have the choice to anonymously warn others if you test positive for coronavirus - this will help keep other people safe
  • Protect yourself and others as everyone begins to return to normal life

Since Ireland is using Apple and Google's Exposure Notification API, the app uses Bluetooth instead of location tracking, meaning that any location data that is collected is stored locally on the device and that, if a user does choose to share data with the health agency, it will be anonymized.

Your data is collected anonymously and stored on your phone. Your name, location, or movements are not tracked. You will be asked to allow the app to collect:

  • Your anonymous data
  • Anonymous data sent by other app users' devices

You can choose:

  • What data you want to share
  • To change your privacy settings at any time
  • To use the app without sharing any data at all

No one will ever know your personal details unless you choose to share them. This includes the HSE.

If you are in Ireland and want to do your part to help contain the spread of the virus, you can download the COVID Tracker Ireland app from the App Store.

Reddit has also been caught snooping on user's clipboards in iOS 14

Reddit is the latest app to get caught snooping on the clipboard in iOS 14.

What you need to know

  • The Reddit app has been caught snooping on users' clipboard content.
  • It is the latest in a series of apps to be caught copying data from the clipboard.
  • Reddit says that the behavior is unintended and will be removed in an update.

Yet another app has been caught snooping on users' clipboard contents in the iOS 14 beta.

Twitter user DonCubed, who also reported the same behavior with the LinkedIn app, found that the Reddit app was copying the contents of a user's clipboard on every keystroke.

"UPDATE: Seems like Reddit is capturing the clipboard on each keystroke as well 😕. Seeing the notification come up just as much."

In an email to The Verge, a spokesperson from Reddit says the behavior is unintended and that the company does not store or send the contents that they've copied anywhere. Regardless, they are removing the behavior from the app in an update that will be released to the public on July 14th.

"We tracked this down to a codepath in the post composer that checks for URLs in the pasteboard and then suggests a post title based on the text contents of the URL ... We do not store or send the pasteboard contents. We removed this code and are releasing the fix on July 14th."

Reddit has joined two other high profile apps, LinkedIn and TikTok, in receiving backlash about its clipboard snooping practices. While it appears that many apps are engaging in the behavior due to simple coding issues, all will most likely face public scrutiny over the practice due to its appearance of invading user's privacy.
