In Game of Thrones, Jon Snow has to decide whether Daenerys is a worthy queen

Spoilers ahead for “Winterfell,” episode 1 of Game of Thrones, season 8.

In the premiere of Game of Thrones’ season 8, the audience finally got the payoff from a secret fans have wondered about for years, which was confirmed in season 7: Jon Snow isn’t illegitimate, he’s the descendant of a Targaryen king, and the true heir to the Iron Throne of Westeros. (That’s if you discount the Baratheons’ takeover of the throne, and the Lannisters’ subsequent rule.) Although last season, Sam and Bran pieced together the truth about Jon’s parents, Jon himself has had no clue, and has been inadvertently engaging in incest by sleeping with Daenerys Targaryen, his aunt.

While it was extremely satisfying to hear Sam tell Jon the truth about his...

The North’s history explains the current politics of Game of Thrones

HBO’s Game of Thrones is a dense series with a huge weight of history behind its story, so in practically every episode, something happens that could use a little explanation. So every week, The Verge will be diving into a scene or event from the latest installment of the series and explain how we got here. Whether you’re basically a Game of Thrones maester or you need a little reminder about previous events, we’ll try to help you keep your history straight.

Game of Thrones is back, and this week’s season premiere did a whole lot of place-setting for the season to come. And one of the key pieces of setup was re-establishing the major players of the various houses in the North, which have seen some shifts in allegiances since we’ve last...

Game of Thrones’ new opening credits sequence holds a lot of clues for this season

Spoilers ahead for “Winterfell,” episode 1 of Game of Thrones, season 8, and for season 7.

Game of Thrones is back for its long-awaited eighth season. After an energetic recap sequence, the season premiere, “Winterfell,” presented a whole new opening-credits sequence, which departs from the title sequences in previous seasons. The title segment, which flies a point-of-view camera around a map of the fictional country of Westeros, used to regularly change to reflect locations that might be significant that episode or season. But in the season 8 intro, the action starts outside Westeros, in the furthest north, clueing the audience into the path taken by the undead army of White Walkers that threatens Westeros.

First, the camera pans over...

Game of Thrones: where to watch season 8 and how much it’ll cost

As most people already know, there’s only one way to watch the final season of Game of Thrones live, and it involves getting some form of HBO subscription. Season 8, which will close out the series, begins airing on Sunday, April 14th, at 9PM ET. The eighth season will consist of six episodes, which will air on Sundays at 9PM ET. The series will wrap on May 19th.

The World Next Door mixes match-3 puzzles with magical teens

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.

The World Next Door is a great game that I almost wish didn’t meet the short runtime required for this column. It combines elements of action role-playing games with match-3 puzzle gameplay, somewhat reminiscent of the RPG series Puzzle Quest. Its story has hints of Persona and Undertale, hitting on some similar themes of friendship, magic, and monsters. It’s an intriguing mix, but in the four hours or so it can take to finish, it doesn’t feel like you get quite enough time to spend with the characters or the gameplay.

You...

9 new trailers you should watch this week

Last weekend, I watched Madeline’s Madeline, a dizzying film about a teenage girl in an experimental theater troupe who’s also struggling with an unidentified mental illness. The film is particularly clever when it comes to melding its premise with its camerawork — the ethos of the theater troupe and the ill confusion its protagonist feels is often the lens we see the world of this movie through.

The movie also tries to grapple with some complicated questions around appropriation that become uncomfortably meta when you read about how the film was developed. The movie focuses on a relationship between a black teenage girl and a white director who wants to, essentially, steal her story for a play. The film, likewise, was formed when its...

Strong corporate desktop sales limit the decline of the PC market

Acer’s new ConceptD line is for creatives who want powerful yet quiet PCs

NEW YORK—Acer added to its already extensive family of PCs with an entirely new line today. Dubbed ConceptD, the new family of laptops, towers, and displays are designed for creatives who often gravitate to gaming PCs for their power but may also be turned off by those devices’ unique designs and loud cooling noise.

Acer explained at its event in Brooklyn, New York, today that it took a lot of inspiration from its Predator gaming line when making ConceptD machines. However, that inspiration manifested mostly in the new machines’ internals—most ConceptD devices have the latest 9th-gen Intel processors and powerful Nvidia graphics cards, providing the necessary performance to serve a number of creatives (think animators, graphic designers, VR engineers, etc).

As far as external design goes, ConceptD machines borrow some aspects from Acer’s consumer families but also incorporate white and wooden accents for an airier, modern look. The ConceptD 9 convertible has a design similar to Acer’s Aspire R13, featuring a hinge that allows you to move the display forward and backward (Acer calls this its Ezel Aero hinge). The display itself is a 17.3-inch 4K display that has a DeltaE of less than one, which means it will render colors that are nearly as accurate as those in real life (a DeltaE closer to 0 results in more accurate colors).

Google+ is back! Meet the enterprise-focused “Google Currents”

Google+ may have shut down its consumer side earlier this month, but the code base still lives on at Google. After diving into the social media wars and getting routed, Google+ will live out its retirement as "Google Currents"—it's the Google+ code base, but with an enterprise focus. The reborn Google+/Currents will now do battle with Facebook again, this time with the enterprise version of Facebook, called "Workplace," and also Microsoft's Yammer. Surely things will go differently this time.

Google Currents is, uh, currently launching as a beta service that G Suite admins can request access to. The enterprise focus means it's for paying G Suite customers only. Google's blog post says Currents "enables people to have meaningful discussions and interactions across your organization, helping keep everyone in the know and giving leaders the opportunity to connect with their employees." Currents looks exactly like Google+, but with a new logo and maybe a slightly whiter color scheme.

Currents is now the second big enterprise communication tool from Google. The other is Google Hangouts Chat, which is a Google's version of a Slack clone. Just like Currents, Hangouts Chat is closely associated with a dying consumer Google product, Google Hangouts. (Why does it seem like G Suite is getting all the consumer leftovers?) Both products will greatly benefit from their association with G Suite, which pulls in enterprise customers with killer apps like Gmail, Calendar, Docs, and Drive. The sales pitch is basically "Since you're already paying for that sweet Gmail account with a custom domain, why not try out these social apps, too?"

Developers love Python and TypeScript, get paid for Clojure, and aren’t using blockchain

Stack Overflow's annual developer survey was published this week, giving an insight into the skills, experience, and opinions of a wide slice of the developer community. Since its launch in 2008, Stack Overflow has become an essential developer tool, offering copy/paste solutions to an ever-growing number of programming problems.

The Stack Overflow survey is particularly interesting, as Stack Overflow does not focus on any one kind of developer or development; is used by professionals, students, and hobbyists alike; and has substantial use across Europe, North America, and Asia, with respectable representation from South America, Africa, and Oceania. As such, it gives a view of the software development industry as a whole, across all fields and disciplines.

To the surprise of nobody, Web technology remains top of the usage chart: some 67.8 percent of developers use JavaScript, giving it the number one position; and 63.5 percent use HTML and CSS in second place. SQL once again takes the third slot, at 54.4 percent. The first change relative to last year's survey comes at the fourth spot, with Python pushing Java into fifth place and Bash/shell scripting into sixth. C#, PHP, and C++ retain their same relative ordering at the seventh, eighth, and ninth slots.

Samsung over-complicates phone design with a motorized, pop-up, swivel camera

Don't ever let anyone tell you smartphone design is boring. We've seen companies come up with various solutions to hide the front-facing camera "notch," from a motorized pop-up section to a fully old-school slider phone, but the latest implementation from Samsung is probably the most complicated. The company made a device with a motorized, pop-up, swivel camera.

The mid-range Galaxy A80 is an all-screen phone with an Oppo FInd X style motorized pop-up section. Samsung is one-upping its Chinese rival with a camera that swivels around when it rises, so the back camera can double as the front camera. There is a lot going on with this swivel camera section, too: there's a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, and 3D depth-sensing equipment.

Despite the trick camera setup, this device is positioned firmly behind Samsung's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S10. The display is a huge 6.7-inches, but the resolution is only 2400×1080. That gives it a DPI of 393, which pales in comparison to the 526 DPI of the Galaxy S10. Samsung is using the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset, an eight-core chip built on an 8nm process. Since it only launched yesterday, we don't have serious benchmarks for comparison, but the 730 and 730G (that's a gaming-focused variant) slot in after the 845 as Qualcomm's second-fastest mobile SoC.
