Un año en la estación Halley VI de la Antártida

Los exploradores de la estación de investigación británica Halley VI en la antártida dedicaron parte de su tiempo a fotografiar y tomar vídeos de sus actividades a lo largo de todo un año; este montaje es el resumen de sus vivencias.

Esta estación está situada a 76° de latitud sur; existe desde 1956 aunque se ha ido reemplazando cada pocos años por estructuras más modernas. En verano suelen estar a -10°C, en invierno a -20°C y en condiciones extremas de frío han llegado alguna vez a los -55°C.

No llega a ser un 1 en la escala de cielo oscuro de Bortle, pero el cielo nocturno del Salar de Bonneville se le aproxima, y es un recordatorio de lo que supone la pérdida de la oscuridad.

Night Sky Panorama-Bonneville Salt Flats-3D Panorama es un panorama navegable creado por Martin van Hemert en el que se puede apreciar la oscuridad del desierto del oeste de Utah, sólo interrumpido por una interestatal y la ciudad de Wendover, cuya iluminación resalta el suelo pero sin desdibujar el cielo.

En Bonneville Salt Flats - 3D Panorama se puede ver el Salar de día.

Pebble's Eric Migicovsky Is Uninterested In A Potential Acquisition

When it comes to competition, Pebble has plenty to be concerned about. In an interview on-stage at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013, founder Eric Migicovsky seemed unconcerned about questions on competition from Apple and Samsung, claiming that Motorola and Sony have offered smart watch products for quite some time.

However, speaking backstage, Migicovsky went a bit more in-depth with the latest products from Samsung and the idea of a forthcoming Apple iWatch, and stating that Pebble would be pretty uninterested in the idea of an acquisition by the competition, should it be offered.

“In the Samsung Galaxy Gear presentation on stage, Samsung was really heavy on features for the watch but skirted how people actually use it every day,” said Migicovsky. “I use my watch on a daily basis, looking at upcoming weather forecast, with an app for Evernote, and an app on the phone to customize the watch with drag-and-drop functions that auto syncs to the watch.”

According to Migicovsky, Pebble is fortunate to have been working on wearable computing for years in the background, constantly iterating, as wearables heat up in general.

“We’re in a great position because we get to figure out what works first,” said Migicovsky.

That said, Migicovsky didn’t seem interested in the idea of an acquisition. For the record, Migicovsky claims that Pebble has never been made an acquisition offer by Samsung or Apple or anyone else for that matter, but hypothetically speaking, it’s not something that peaks his interest.

“We’re staying laser focused on the task of creating a platform that people can build on top of to communicate with wearables, and we won’t do anything that causes a distraction from that goal.”

But that doesn’t mean that there’s no new hardware in the pipeline. For now, Pebble is working on building the ecosystem around the product, like the companies building special bands or the developers building apps. Eventually, though, Migicovsky hinted that Pebble is looking at the other materials people wear on their wrists, perhaps hinting at a luxury model down the road.

After all, the Pebble is a sports watch.

Hace unos días Raúl me escribió pidiéndome alguna recomendación para ir iniciando a su hijo en el mundo de la astronomía y esto fue lo que se me ocurrió recomendarle; lo cuento aquí por si a alguien más le sirve:

El universo para curiosos de Nancy Hathaway, un libro que sospecho que usará más bien Raúl, para ir aprendiendo cosas que contarle al pequeño.

Los mapas del cielo de Skymaps, gratuitos y actualizados cada mes –aunque admiten donativos– para saber qué es lo que se cuece en el cielo.

Stellarium, un magnífico planetario para el ordenador, gratuito y disponible en múltiples plataformas, para ver qué y a qué hora se puede ver desde donde vives o desde donde vayas a estar.

SkySafari –es el que uso yo, pero hay bastantes más– en el móvil para que, cuando por fin sales a mirar el cielo, tengas una guía a mano por si te pierdes.

Luego, si prende la llamita, vendrá lo de hacerse con unos prismáticos, un telescopio, buscar una asociación astronómica en la zona, etc.
